WHY? Consumer electronics’ sector is one of the biggest generators of domestic waste, due to rising consumption levels of products with short lifecycles and almost none end-of-life solutions.

Globally, only 17% of e-waste is officially picked up and recycled, according to the United Nations’ specialized source Global E-Waste Statistics Partnership. Thus, more than 80% of the total waste is discarded, losing track to very valuable materials and toxic substances that are leaked into nature.

WHAT? In collaboration with Hune’s R+D area we have developed a range of products that integrates environmental and social criteria composed of a bluetooth speaker, earphones, different kinds of cables and chargers, all of them made with 100% of post-consumer recycled plastic in cases and sheathings.

Hune is an example of the integration of ecodesign strategies in the whole life cycle of the products to get a much better environmental impact, such as using certified recycled plastic and designing stronger products. We pushed for the optimization in transportation, designed the packaging with reduced dimensions, made with FSC cardboard and plant-based ink printing, designing out plastics, varnishes, and glues for the end-of-life treatment benefit.

HOW? We worked on an Impact Report (PIR) for each product that makes explicit the environmental benefits achieved thanks to the different decisions that have been taken: for example, the carbon footprint in the fabrication of cases and sheathings of these products is reduced between 81 and 94% when compared with standard products, thanks to the use of recycled plastic.

The traceability of the post-consumer recycled plastic is guaranteed by the GRS certification, and social responsibility is certified under BSCI standards in all suppliers.

We have integrated ourselves into Hune’s business structure to work hand in hand with them and be able to propose strategies in different lifecycle’s phases and product distribution, given that they have experience in logistics, and we could offer our know-how in terms of sustainability.

Hune encourages circularity by working with local recyclers and offering the clients a collection service for products that are no longer in use (not only Hune’s products), fostering a proper treatment for e-waste.
